This Month's Tip

Spring cleaning pretty much seems unavoidable, and yet some people get carried away, especially when they are armed with a pressure washer. Pressure washers can be extremely useful tools, but they can also create some problems. Here are a few tips on where best to use them and where best to keep them away: Exterior surfaces such as driveways and patios are great candidates for the pressure washer – they clean up nicely and, frankly, the build-up of dirt, etc. nearly necessitates the power of the pressure washer to come clean. Beware of “tiger-striping” where uneven application with the wand results in a less than perfectly clean surface. When washing the exterior siding of your house, don’t get too close or else you are likely to cause damage to your exterior siding finish. Also, be careful around windows and doors as high-pressure water inevitably will find its way to the inside, pushing dirty water where you definitely don’t want it. Roof stains are particularly tricky. Not only is it awkward and dangerous to traverse your roof, but applying pressured water to the shingles can remove valuable protective elements (such as asphalt shingle granules) and can potentially create leaks. Our advise is to leave this one to the pro’s! Sometimes the application of bleach-and-water prior to pressure washing can be effective in removing mildew and stubborn dirt – just be careful about surrounding plants and grass as they generally don’t respond well to bleach. Finally, be a good neighbor. Pressure washers are usually loud, and nothing ruins a quiet weekend afternoon more than the cycling drone of a gas pressure washer just next door. Consider giving your neighbor the head’s up for when you plan on tackling this effective spring cleaning chore.

Verizon Heritage Golf Tournament
As mentioned above, this year’s tournament in Sea Pines was blessed with unbeatable weather. The golf was compelling all the through down to the last hole where the tournament was won on the 18th by first-time PGA winner Aaron Baddeley, making back-to-back Australian winners at the Heritage tournament. Favorite Jim Furyk held a good lead until upset in the final holes of the 4-day tournament.

Quarterdeck Re-Opens
This popular Harbourtown restaurant & bar has re-opened recently under new ownership by the Sea Pines Company. After $500,000 in renovations and upgrades, the upstairs restaurant is now called the Topside at the Quarterdeck and features an outstanding menu predominated by seafood specialties. With its spectacular Calibogue Sound views and unforgettable sunsets, this is sure to be a long-standing favorite for visitors and locals alike. After you check it out, let us know what you think

Ocean-Front Dining
There are very few direct-oceanfront restaurants on the Island, so be sure to check out the newly-re-opened restaurant at the SeaCrest, now called Aqua Grille. We don’t know much about their new menu, but we know that the setting is pretty spectacular.
