Quiet October
October traditionally is
one of the busiest months of the Fall season for real estate
sales in our area. However, as is the case every 4 years, the
Presidential elections have drawn away most people’s attention
from the real estate market, thereby making it a
quieter-than-normal October. Of course, the Wall Street Blues
and government “rescue plan” dominating the national media
doesn’t help much either… and we are still hanging out in a
softened-marketplace, trying to establish bottom so that we
can get back into more bustling conditions. So… what’s it all
mean? It’s pretty clear that buying-opportunities are more
prevalent now than ever before, and it is an exciting time to
consider investing in real estate. So many people over time
have said “If only I had bought on the Island 10 years ago, 20
years, ago, etc..” The energy is in the air, and it’s called
opportunity. We are excited for those buyers who have the
vision and ability to take advantage of it. Some of the “buys”
are simply incredible.

This Month's Tip - It’s that time
of year again! Beaufort County has released 2008
property tax amounts. Bills should be mailed the week of
October 20th, but if you just can’t wait to find out how
much you’ll owe, go to: http://www.bcgov.net/RealProperty/New_RealProp/Search_Name.php
and enter your name as it appears on your tax bill. This
will pull up your tax record and you’ll see the amount
owed for 2008 under the Historical Info section.
Please note that if you purchased property in 2007 and that property has lost value, you may be entitled to appeal the amount assessed. For example: you bought a house in January 2007 for $500,000 and due to the market downturn that property in December 2007 was worth $450,000. The assessment statement says your assessed value is the point of sale at $500,000. You may be entitled to appeal the amount since your property has gone down in value. For more information on the appeals process, please contact the Beaufort County Assessor’s Office at 843-470-2519.

Concours d'Elegance
Hilton
Head Island’s popular motoring festival, Concours
d’Elegance, returned to the Island October 30
– November 2. This year’s event was a
crowd pleaser with over 150 vintage cars
competing for Best in Show and People’s Choice
Titles. Other events included Historic Tracks Day,

As part of an informal series of stories,
we’d like to take time every once in a while to share
some of our experiences about what makes living on
Hilton Head Island so enjoyable. This month…
Honey,
Have You Seen the Kids?
If you have children or grandchildren, you are
likely aware of the growing trend for kids to be
super-busy. Between homework, sports, extra-curriculars,
community service, etc., kids these days seem to have
little time for being… kids. One of the great things
about living on the Island is that around here, the kids
have some unique opportunities to enjoy pretty
spectacular natural-surroundings as they accomplish
their tasks. For instance, the largest community
ball-field facility is just a block from the beach,
affording nice breezes and the sound of surf in the
distance. A Girl Scout’s troop recently was featured in
the paper for their annual event of picking up litter
from the local beaches. The Island Recreation Center
hosted an all-outdoor triathlon for kids… in October!
The South Carolina Yacht Club gets sailors started early
as it hosts its annual summer-long sailing program for
kids. Horseback riding is more popular than ever as kids
take advantage of world-class equestrian facilities,
such as Rose Dhu Creek, throughout the area. The Sea
Pines Montessori Academy features tennis and golf as
mainstay fixtures in its integrated physical-education
curriculum. The list goes on and on, constantly spoiling
Island-area kids with year-round opportunities to live a
vibrant lifestyle filled with outdoor activities in one
of the country’s most beautiful settings – Hilton Head
Island.
